CONVENTIONS USED IN DATABASE
What follows is a brief description of some of the conventions used in this database which will help to explain why there may be descrepancies between the entries in this database and the entries in official registries or other pedigree databases.
"BREEDING INFO"
I have configured the database so that only dogs with the same parents and same birthdate will appear as littermates. Thus, repeat breedings will show up as separate litters. If a puppy has an incorrect birthdate or no birthdate in the database, it will show up in a separate litter from its littermates who do have a correct birthdate. If repeat breedings took place and I have no birthdates for any of the offspring, all of of the offspring will appear as one litter with the same "blank" birthdate.
NAMES
Health Certifications noted as a part of name
* following a dog's name indicates that that dog has a CERF (Canine Eye Registry Foundation) number.
Hips scores for a dog are attached to the end of a dog's name. For example: "Rover (OFA-G)" for an American Clumber or "Rover (UA)" or "Rover(1-2)" for a Swedish Clumber.
I've done this to make it easier to identify dogs with these health certifications in any generation of a pedigree.
Kennel Names
Kennel names have been standardized to lessen the chances of duplicate records and to facilitate searches for dogs in the database. For example, dogs from the same kennel registered with the variations on the kennel name of
Westgate, Westgate's, Westgates, West Gate, and Wstgte might all appear as Westgates. There is at least one case in the database where the same kennel name is used for an older English kennel and a recent American kennel. In this instance I have omitted any apostrophe before the final "s" in the English kennel name and I have kept or added (as the case might be) the apostrophe before the final "s" in all of the entries from the American kennel so that one can, at a glance, identify which kennel the dog came from.
Individual Dog Names - unregistered dogs or unknown names
Dogs who have not been registered are generally identified by the kennel name of the breeder followed by the pet or call name in quotation marks.
In cases where I have reason to believe that there are a certain number of puppies in a litter, but do not have a name or sex, I have identified the puppy as follows: (kennel name) "puppy 1A," (kennel name) "puppy 2A," (kennel name) "puppy 1B," etc. The numbers in the name indicate invidual puppies within a litter and the letters represent distinct litters. If I know the sex of the unregistered puppy (which is often the case where breeders report a litter but the puppies haven't been registered or been given a pet name), I will often have (kennel name) "female puppy 1A," etc.
BIRTHDATES
Birthdates are in the US format of Month, Day, Year (mm/dd/yyyy).
TITLES
For the purposes of this database, "CH" indicates a US (AKC) Champion.
Championships from other countries will be prefixed by an abbreviation for that country or will use an abbreviation typical for or unique to that country.
At some time in the future I will provide a link to all of the title abbreviations used in the database.
In cases where a dog has earned progressively more advanced titles in a given area, I have kept only the most advanced title. For example, a dog with a CD and a CDX would only have the CDX appended to its name in the database.
COLOR
While the color doesn't currently appear in the database, I hope to customize the pedigrees to include color at some time in the future.
With a very few exceptions, I have adopted the convention of recording only 3 color choices for Clumbers: White, Orange and White, and Lemon and White.
The AKC has recently been registering what were "Orange (or Lemon) and White" as "White with Orange (or Lemon) markings." For the time being at least, I will continue to use the older AKC color terminology in the database.
I collect quite a bit of data using the AKC's online store for dog reports. Unfortunately, these reports will only indicate "White" for those dogs actually registered as "White with Orange (or Lemon) Markings." So, unless I have heard from the breeder or owner, a good number of more recent US Clumbers who are in the database as "White" will actually be either "Orange and White" or "Lemon and White."
